Getting the voice note out of WhatsApp

On Android, press and hold the voice message, tap Share and save it to Files — it arrives as an .opus file named like AUD-…-WA….opus. On iPhone, press and hold, choose Forward, tap the share icon and pick Save to Files; you get an .m4a. On WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, open the message menu and choose Download. Upload that file here. A long rambling message becomes something you can skim in seconds, and a voice note in a language you do not speak can be translated once the transcript is done.

How it works

Three steps to your first transcript

  1. Drop in your file

Audio or video of any length; the free plan transcribes the first 15 minutes of each file. MP3, MP4, M4A, WAV, MOV and a dozen more.

  2. Pick the language

Leave the language on automatic or set it for better accuracy. Turn on speaker recognition if you need to know who said what.

  3. Read, edit, export

The transcript opens with clickable timestamps — read it and fix a name straight away. A free account keeps it and exports it as TXT; DOCX, PDF, SRT and VTT come with the unlimited plan.

FAQ

Questions before you upload

Try it on this page

Does it work with the .opus files WhatsApp saves?

Yes. WhatsApp stores voice notes as .opus or .ogg on Android and on the web, and as .m4a when exported from an iPhone. All three upload as they are — there is nothing to convert first.

The voice note mixes two languages. What should I pick?

Choose Detect automatically. It works out the language from the audio. If the speaker switches language halfway through, the part in the less dominant language is where mistakes are most likely, so read that part against the audio.

Can I get it in English if the message is in another language?

Yes. Transcribe it in the language it was spoken in, then translate the finished transcript. The timestamps stay attached, so you can still jump to the moment a sentence was said.
